[Indonesia] Green Canyon (Cukang Taneuh)

Green Canyon
Green Canyon tourist spot located in the village Kertayasa, Ciamis, West Java, about 31 km from Pangandaran. The name was introduced by Green Canyon tourists from France. Greenish color of river water may be the reason this place called Green Canyon. While the previous name, Cukang Taneuh means land bridge because of the bridge with a width of 3 meters and 40 meters long reach that connects the village with the Village Batukaras Kertayasa.

Dettifoss
Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. It is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in Northeast Iceland. The falls are 100 m wide and have a drop of 45 m down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. It is the largest waterfall in Europe in terms of volume discharge, having an average water flow of 193 m3/s.

The Astuvansalmi, rock paintings, are located in Ristiina, Southern Savonia, Finland at the shores of the lake Yövesi, which is a part of the large lake Saimaa. The rock paintings are the largest found in the whole of Scandinavia. They consist of 65 paintings. The rock paintings were officially found by the Finnish archaeologist Pekka Sarvas in 1968, though locals knew about them already before that.

The original name of the Morning Glory Pool was Convolutus.  The pool was named by Mrs. E. N. McGowan, wife of Assistant Park Superintendent, Charles McGowan in 1883. She called it "Convolutus", the Latin name for the morning glory flower of which the springs resemble. By 1889, the name Morning Glory Pool had become common usage in the park. Many early guidebooks called this feature Morning Glory Spring.

Party-goers frequenting Kemang’s packed pubs and posh restaurants probably don’t know they’re in prickly company: the area is named after a wild, sweet variety of mango tree known for its irritating sap. This and other little-known facts about the names of places around the capital are the subject of Rachmat Ruchiat’s book, “Asal Usul Nama Tempat Di Jakarta” (“The Origins of the Names of Places in Jakarta”), which was released two weeks ago, just in time for the 484th anniversary of the city’s founding this month.

[Iran] Iran launches second satellite into orbit, claims state TV

Iran has launched a satellite into orbit, state television reported, a move likely to raise concerns among those who fear Iran's intentions and nuclear development programme. The report said the locally produced satellite, called Rasad, or observation, was launched successfully by a Safir missile on Wednesday. There was no independent confirmation of the launch or of the satellite achieving orbit.

A Canadiandeveloped infrared sensor designed to help monitor forest fires, pollutants and volcanic activity was launched into space Friday. An Argentine satellite with eight instruments aboard - including the Quebec-built sensor - rocketed into orbit at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California for a five-year mission.

Biokovo is second most elevated mountain run in Croatia, placed in the Dalmatian shoreline of Adriatic, in the middle of the currents of Neretva and Cetina. The 196 km² of its region is secured as a nature park. Its highest peak is Sveti Jure (Saint George), at 1762 metres. It is sometimes referenced to as Bijakova, especially among inhabitants of the eastern side of the mountain. When the weather is very clear, from the top of Biokovo it is possible to see Monte Gargano in Italy, which is 252 km away.

White Desert, Farafra

The Farafra depressionis the second greatest gloom by size spotted in Western Egypt and the humblest by citizenry, near latitude 27.06° North and longitude 27.97° East. It is located in the Western Desert of Egypt, approximately mid-way between Dakhla and Bahariya. Farafra has an estimated 5,000 inhabitants (2002) mainly living in the town of Farafra and is mostly inhabited by the local Bedouins. Parts of the town have complete quarters of traditional architecture, simple, smooth, unadorned, all in mud colour.

It is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried next to the mosque (outer left side). The mosque was opened for worship since Eid Al Adha December 2007.
